Harmony of Nostalgia and Passion:

Fingerboard Dreams

When nostalgia, passion, and creativity come together to create a fulfilling hobby and business, you get 6deep (Husband & wife). The fingerboard community is broad and diverse, welcoming those who appreciate the art of it, its construction, or simply enjoy active participation. Not many people are aware that there is a whole community spread across Instagram, Reddit, Facebook, YouTube, and much more, where enthusiasts share their love for finger boarding. 6deep has some amazing insights into this vibrant world…

What is a fingerboard, what got you hooked?

“A fingerboard is essentially a scaled-down replica of a full-sized skateboard, but it’s designed for your fingers. I get it, it might sound like just another passing fad, and trust me, I thought the same thing back in the 90s, lol! However, the game has changed. Nowadays, you can customize your fingerboard with different-colored wooden veneers for the middle or outside plies, diverse designs, and trucks in various colors. The options seem endless, and that’s what got me hooked!” – 6deep. Getting hooked on these boards is entirely predictable; the limitless possibilities for creativity are undeniably present.

At the beginning of the year, 6deep stumbled upon some “Teak Tuning completes,” featuring wooden ply decks and responsive metal trucks.

Trucks – they are the T-shaped turning components found beneath the deck with wheels attached. Their role is to ensure that your movements are effectively transmitted to the deck, allowing it to react as you desire. Having the right set of trucks is crucial for both you and your skateboard to perform at their best.

Witnessing these Teak Tuning completes reignited that nostalgic feeling akin to the first encounter with a Tech Deck. It sparked a massive wave of inspiration and passion in 6deep. He expressed, “I fell in love! This time, I wanted to delve deeper into it.” This exploration led him to discover a vibrant fingerboard community on Instagram, and what he found was truly amazing—artwork, talent, and a variety of riding styles. 6deep was particularly impressed by the inclusive nature of the Fingerboarding World, stating, “Everyone in this Fingerboarding World is so accepting too.”

A New Perspective

Though the feeling was nostalgic, it brought about a new perspective on fingerboards. 6deep exclaimed, “I wanted to see what I could bring to the table. I began searching and obsessing over different molds and names I could use. After a few different ideas, 6deep Fingerboards was born!”

Given the expansive nature of the community, they wanted to inject some of their own ideas and try something different. Opting for 6-ply instead of the standard 5, which most boards have, they found a mold that aligned with their vision and ordered from “Create Your Skate.”

Create Your Skate story began in 2002. As a teenager desperately trying to make the first wooden fingerboards, the founder sanded the initial boards out of a block of wood over days of work. Later discovering that proper skateboards are made from multiple layers of wood veneer, they picked up another block of wood and created their first veneer presses. While the first boards pressed were crooked, warped, and far from perfect, the experience left them incredibly proud to have crafted something with their own hands. This experience profoundly influenced their life. With Create Your Skate, the goal is to convey this unique feeling to as many people as possible. Over the years, the veneer presses have been perfected, and kits have been developed for anyone to use and achieve instant success.

The Build

After receiving all the materials and starting to glue and compress the wooden veneers, 6deep sanded and shaped the boards by hand. Before he knew it, he had a few blank wooden decks built. But something was missing – the best part – a design! With new ideas, he knew the best candidate: “I asked my wife, Cassie, who is a dope painter, to paint me something cool on a deck, and I’ll shred it. One thing led to another, and it came out beautiful! So then the idea was born. Let’s just do a few and see how it goes!”

The dynamic duo brings a blend of their individual talents to the table, deriving immense enjoyment from their creative collaboration. Their shared goal is to craft something enjoyable for themselves, and if it resonates with others, even better! Cassie, with her impressive artistic flair, has conjured up some genuinely cool designs, one of which is a collaborative masterpiece  by them both– “2 decks side by side, featuring eyes on one deck and the mouth on the other. It’s undeniably a standout piece.”

As a creative couple, they work in tandem to produce authentic fingerboards. Deep6 expresses, “Honestly, watching Cassie bring her artistic vision to life with paint, and seeing the reactions on Instagram to her hard work, is simply amazing! We initiated a few giveaways to kickstart things. It’s surreal to witness something we have handcrafted, making waves not only locally but also globally, reaching enthusiasts in the U.K., and even across the USA. The overwhelming response is an indescribable feeling. We cherish it immensely.”

Final thoughts from the 6deep crew –

I appreciate all the kind words and feedback from the Fingerboarding Community! Much love back at you! If there’s anything I could say to someone who wants to start squashing veneers and shaping decks, it’s DO IT! It’s such a gratifying hobby, and you can take it as far as you want. Just keep pushing, and good things will follow!
